Composed of men from Luzerne, Susquehanna, Wyoming, and Lycoming counties, the 143rd was organized in the summer and fall of 1862, led by Colonel Edmund L. Dana. The regiment received the second state color sometime during or after January 1865. The 143rd was mustered out of service on June 12, 1865.

The regimental color was carried at Gettysburg by Corporal Owen Phillips, and he received a promotion to sergeant for his bravery. The flag was retired in the spring of 1864. The 143rd was mustered out of service on June 12, 1865.

Dana. This flag, originally labeled a national color, is probably the Wilkes-Barre color presented by a group of Wilkes-Barre ladies in 1865 and carried by Corporal Rogers W. Cox. The 143rd was mustered out of service on June 12, 1865.
